The motor insurance market in
the UK is a crowded place and this can benefit consumers. While it
helps to reduce prices, there are so many outlets all vying for your
business that it's hard to know which sites will offer the best deals
for your needs and wishes.
Based on frequency of use, motor insurance comparison sites are the
people's choice in terms of where they choose to go routinely to find
their car insurance cover. On the face of it, there would appear to be
great advantages to using an automated motor insurance quote system to
find you the best deals. You fill in your details once, then, within a
few seconds, you are presented with lots of prices from which to
choose. You can't check 100s, even 1000s, of quotes in any other way;
so what's not to like about these services?
Before we answer. Imagine the following scenario. (Please bear with us.
There is a point to this). A man goes into a shoe shop and requests the
cheapest shoes they have. The assistant asks him what size, type,
colour, quality and make of shoe he's looking for but all he repeats
is: 'Just give me your cheapest pair'.
Clearly this is a bizarre and senseless way to proceed and yet this is
exactly how some people go about buying their motor insurance. They
simply select the cheapest quote that they can get - as found on a
motor insurance comparison site - without any consideration of its
policy features. Their thinking is that they want to save money and
they'll take their chances on not needing to claim on their motor
insurance policy.
But let's examine what they are actually doing. They are buying
something that they don't want if they need to use it. To continue our
analogy, they shouldn't be surprised that when they do try on their
shoes, they don't fit.
Motor insurance is no different to any other financial product. You
should acquaint yourself with what you're getting and only use price as
a rough guide. Buying the cheapest motor insurance is rarely a wise
choice when you bear in mind that a policy that's cheaper than 1000s of
others is as cheap as that for a reason. Such a motor insurance policy
is generally an unsatisfactory choice if you don't want to pay a
substantial chunk of your losses in an accident, yourself.
