More and more people are
using our dog insurance services here. As well as our one-form dog
insurance comparison service where it's easy to compare dog insurance
cover, we also have extensive direct dog insurance provider listings.
The latter offers useful information on the cover provided by
well-known and economic pet insurance providers (links above). You can
quickly find out which of these appears to best meet your pet's needs.
While we offer a dog insurance price comparison service, we would
suggest that you look through our direct pet insurance listings first
as going direct to a quality, leading pet insurer has much to recommend
it and we make it easy to quickly assess what you're getting.
In particular, if you opt for getting dog insurance through a price
comparison system, make sure that you know what you're getting first.
For obvious reasons, the cheaper policies tend to offer less. This can
be critical if, for example, you dog needs surgical treatment after an
injury, which can cost thousands of pounds.
Remember that even with the best dog insurance, some conditions are
excluded from the cover. A dog with a pre-existing condition - that is,
that began before taking out insurance - will not be covered for that
condition. Some hereditary conditions are also not covered, for
example, the hip dysplasia of a German Shepard dog.
Routine treatments like vaccinations or neutering are also not included
in dog insurance cover.
What is included usually meets your dog's health care needs,
however. The annual cap for treatment expenditure is rarely reached
while even kennel fees if a dog owner is ill are typically
covered, as is, third party costs if a dog injures a third party.
Because a third of pets need emergency treatment from a vet every year,
it really helps to spread the cost of this treatment through taking out
annual dog insurance. The British Vetinary Association recommends
getting dog insurance routinely and the uptake of it is increasing.
One advantage of dog insurance is that in the event of a more serious
injury or illness, where the treatment may run to thousands of pounds,
the dog owner does not have to deal with the agonising choice between
opting for the cheaper yet final 'treatment' to manage their dog's
distress or to puruse the active intervention.
Another important aspect to check when you buy dog insurance is that
the excess payment is acceptable. Some of the cheapest policies push
this up to reduce the premium.
