A look at where
most people like to get their motor cover shows that the most popular
choice is to get a car insurance quote from a price comparison system.
There are clear financial advantages to doing this. Also, given
that 100s of quotes are generated from one form, the ease of
use of these so-called aggregator systems, is plain to see.
We will argue here, however, that the UK's somewhat unquestioning
embrace of car insurance comparison sites as the best resource to use
to find their car insurance quote is not without
drawbacks.
One of these is to accept the questionable premise on which price
comparison sites are based - that price is a far more important aspect
to focus on for your choice of car insurance quote
than what you are actually getting in terms of the cover.
We believe that what we'll call 'policy comparison sites' would be a
much better approach whereby you select exactly what you want from
checklists then those policies that best meet you requirements are
presented first with those that are a less good fit featuring less
prominently in the results, each car insurance quote having
a full data set in terms of the checklisted policy features. Now that
would be a good way to shop for a car insurance quote
via a comparison system but no such service exists.
What you get is, at best, some summarised policy information from
aggregator services which, we would argue, generally falls short of
what you really need for an informed decision. Thus - and this is
something that we would doubt many people do - you really need to go to
the insurance company's own websites to get the right level of policy
information.
And there is another aspect to this that seems rather curious. People
get easily drawn in by the chance to save money on their car
insurance quote when they see some temptingly low prices. The fact, of
which they are well aware, that cheap policies offer thin, sub-optimal,
cover is not sufficient reason to avoid such a car
insurance quote if it presents the opportunity to save tens of pounds
on their renewal quote.
The solution? Consider getting off the 'cheap is everything' bandwagon
and choose from quality car insurance quote providers
directly like those we list below.
Despite the above points, most will continue to use price comparison
systems and we are keen to service this need here, hence the above
links to three different price comparison sites at the head of this
article. But do be careful!
