If you need or wish to obtain building insurance separately from your contents cover, this is easily done. You can get building insurance direct from leading home insurance companies or brokers, or, as most do, you can compare building insurance quotes online via a good price comparison site. We've included three of these above for you to select from if you so wish. Alternatively, you may wish to use our direct insurance listings. Links to leading brands are provided at the foot of this article.

Given the popularity of price comparison sites, under which circumstances is it better to get a direct
building insurance quote? Well, people vary in terms of where they choose to place themselves on the continuum between, at the one end, very cheap 'no frills' cover and at the other end, excellent, albeit relatively costly, cover.

In practice, most people are clustered at the cheap and cheerful end of this spectrum when they buy
building insurance and, in view of that, there are few reasons why most would choose to depart form the routine use of a price comparison system.

However, we would argue that this failure to properly factor in adequate quality control when you get
building insurance is a mistake. Their focus on low price means that price comparison sites are only at their best for those in the cluster at the low quality end of the spectrum which, although a sizeable group, it has to be asked whether it is really a prudent place to be if you wish to have cover that you'd find attractive in a claim.

B
uilding insurance providers have to compete on price comparison sites; so they have to offer some highly budget policies to compete effectively in this arena. These insurance companies would not try to argue that their lowest-priced cover is necessarily a good choice - it's just a cheap one. Yet this reality seems to be lost to many consumers who are hell-bent on going cheap, whatever the risks in terms of the associated cover.

This, finally, brings us to the question that opened this discussion, namely, when is going direct for
building insurance cover a good idea? To which we would respond:  much more often then people might think, given that going direct allows for the factoring in of better quality control.

Even a cursory glance through our
building insurance provider listings reveals that the cover on offer from these providers is impressive; while prices for like policies tend to be consistent enough for the need to always compare quotes to be not as significant as many may believe.
